Canada has announced a policy to extend post-graduation work permits (PGWP) for international graduates for up to 18 months. The PGWP program allows international graduates to get work experience in Canada by obtaining an open work permit. The policy will allow those with recently expired or expiring PGWP to stay longer and gain additional work experience in Canada. The measure will start on April 6, 2023 by the IRCC.

Foreign nationals whose PGWP has already expired in 2023 or were eligible for the 2022 PGWP facilitative measure will also have the chance to apply for an additional 18-month work permit. Even if their work permit has expired, they can still restore their status and receive an interim work authorization while waiting for the processing of their new work permit application.

This policy is to address the challenges faced by employers in finding and retaining skilled workers, and to allow Canada to retain high-skilled talent. Talented and skilled international graduates play a vital role in addressing Canada’s labour shortage. With the additional work permit extension, eligible applicants can continue to contribute to the Canadian economy while gaining valuable work experience, preparing for the opportunity to apply for permanent residence.

PGWP (Post-Graduation Work Permit) is available for international students who have completed a full-time program of study at a designated learning institution in Canada. To be eligible, the program should have been at least 8 months in duration, and the student must have maintained full-time student status during every academic session, except the final academic session. The student must have also received a transcript and an official letter confirming completion of their program of study.
