As of 11:30 p.m. ET on February 29, 2024, noteworthy changes have been introduced for Mexican citizens intending to travel to Canada. Familiarizing yourself with these changes is crucial to ensure a seamless travel experience. Let’s delve into the essential details for a clearer understanding:

What’s Changing:

Mexican Travels to Canada
  1. eTA Eligibility: From 11:30 p.m. ET on February 29, 2024, meeting new requirements is necessary to be eligible for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).
  2. Cancellation of Existing eTAs: If you currently possess an eTA, it will be automatically canceled, unless you also hold a valid work or study permit.
  3. In-Progress eTA Applications: If you have an eTA application in progress, you must apply for a new eTA or a visitor visa.
  4. Pre-booked Travel Plans: Previous travel arrangements or a valid eTA do not guarantee approval for a new eTA or visa.

How Visitors are Affected:

Visitors, including tourists, short-term students, or business visitors without a valid work or study permit, need to take note:

  1. Previous eTA Holders: If you had an eTA or submitted an application before February 29, 2024, it is no longer valid. You must either apply and be approved for a new eTA or a visitor visa.
  2. Application Timing: Wait until after 11:30 p.m. ET on February 29, 2024, to apply for a visitor visa or reapply for an eTA.
  3. Avoid Immediate Application: If you don’t have immediate travel plans, it is advisable to wait to apply for your eTA to prevent system delays.

Who Can Apply for an eTA Under the New Rules:

To be eligible for an eTA under the new rules, you must:

  1. Use a valid Mexican passport for fly to Canada or to transit through a Canadian airport to another destination.
  2. Plan a short visit (typically up to 6 months).
  3. Meet one of the following:
    • Have held a Canadian visitor visa in the past 10 years, or
    • Currently hold a valid United States nonimmigrant visa.

Note: An eTA is solely for air travel; other modes require a visitor visa. Despite being eligible for an eTA, you must obtain a visitor visa if your travel to Canada involves car, bus, train, or boat transportation, including cruise ships, even if you remain on board and do not disembark.

Impact on Different Travelers from Mexico:

  • Mexican Citizens Already in Canada (Without Study or Work Permit): You can remain in Canada as long as your authorization permits. If you have a visitor record, it stays valid. However, your eTA will be canceled. If you leave Canada and plan to come back, you must either have a visitor visa or obtain a new eTA issued after 11:30 p.m. ET on February 29, 2024.
  • Study Permit and Work Permit Holders: If you currently hold a valid work or study permit, your existing eTA will not be canceled. No need to seek a new eTA; you can continue using it as long as it remains valid. Your ability to study or work in Canada will be in accordance with your permit’s validity and conditions. Your visitor records will also stay valid. For those applying for a new work or study permit, upon approval, we will automatically provide you with a visa or an eTA (based on eligibility). There’s no need for a separate application for a visa or eTA.
  • Dual Citizens: Canadian-Mexican citizens need a valid Canadian passport, while lawful permanent residents of the United States don’t require a visa or eTA.

As we navigate the evolving landscape of travel requirements, it is crucial for Mexican citizens planning a visit to Canada to stay informed about the latest changes effective February 29, 2024. Whether securing a new Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) or obtaining a visitor visa for alternative modes of travel, careful adherence to these regulations ensures a seamless and compliant journey.

Remember, the cancellation of existing eTAs necessitates timely action. For those already in Canada, understanding the implications and acquiring the appropriate authorizations for re-entry is vital. By staying informed and proactively addressing these changes, travelers can enjoy a smooth and trouble-free experience in exploring the wonders of Canada. Safe travels!
